Environmental protection

UAB ,Krovinių terminalas“ is systematically working to prevent pollution by carrying out environmental monitoring. The Terminal’s employees continuously monitor, measure, review and improve the performance of the integrated management system and meet and maintain all modern environmental requirements and obligations.

UAB ,,Krovinių terminalas“ carries out the following environmental monitoring on an ongoing basis:

  1. Groundwater monitoring,
  2. Surface water monitoring,
  3. Monitoring of stationary sources of ambient air pollution,
  4. Monitoring of the impact on the quality of the environment.

Environmental protection measures used in the course of operations:

  • Special covers-valves are used for unloading petroleum products from railway tank-cars, which reduce the release of volatile organic compounds into the environment by up to 98 %.
  • The shore tanks are equipped with floating pontoons which reduce the release of VOCs* into the ambient air by up to 95%.
  • The Terminal is equipped with a vapour (VOC) recovery unit* with a capacity of more than 2 000 m³ per hour. The unit is used during tanker and railway tank-car loading operations.
  • Waste sorting.
  • Replacement of fluorescent and incandescent lamps with energy-efficient LED lamps.
  • Servicing and maintenance of wastewater treatment units. Periodic (2 times a year) replacement and cleaning of wastewater treatment filters.

Vapour recovery unit

The Terminal is equipped with a vapour recovery unit manufactured by the “John Zink Hamworthy Combustion” company, based in the USA. It is required to prevent the direct release of VOCs from storage tanks into the atmosphere during the loading of light petroleum products onto tankers and/or railway tank-cars. When loading tankers and/or railway tank-cars, the resulting VOC mixture is not released into the atmosphere but is passed through the activated carbon of the vapour recovery unit, where the vapour is condensed, converted back into liquid petroleum products and returned to the tanker or shore tanks during the process. Each tanker arriving at the terminal must have its own vapour recovery unit or a connection to the terminal’s vapour recovery unit. Only then the Klaipėda Harbour Master’s Office shall authorise the tanker to enter the Port of Klaipėda.

Monitoring of the Sanitary Environment Zone

UAB ,,Krovinių Terminalas‘‘ constantly monitors for possible environmental contamination. This monitoring is carried out on a monthly basis by measuring volatile organic compounds (VOC) values at four monitoring points:

A – Molo str.,
B – at the intersection of Švyturio and Pušyno streets,
C – at the Klaipėda Central Sports Stadium,
D – “berth zero”, 7 Vėtros Street.

In accordance with the requirements of LST EN ISO 14001:2015, UAB ,,Krovinių terminalas“ carried out an environmental analysis.
The environmental aspects of the company have been identified and the most significant ones have been selected.
